One of the most popular ideas that has spread around the Internet is the LOL cats. And now (thanks to digital magic), these cute kitties are into trade shows.

LOL cats are pictures of cats in funny positions that people have added even funnier captions, usually with misspellings and odd speech. LOL cats can be found on the highly amusing website www.icanhascheezburger.com, and now here on Skyline Trade Show Tips.

These cats not only have 9 lives, they apparently have even more trade shows. They have faced with good humor the travails of booth staffing, travel, promotions, booth display set up and shipping, lead management, exhibit design, and more. All chronicled in the images below.

Enjoy, and be sure to share the laughs with your trade show colleagues!

What if Chuck Norris became a trade show exhibitor? He would take it to a whole new level. Read these 19 ways Chuck Norris would change trade show exhibiting!

Chuck Norris’s toughness is so legendary, there are hundreds of Chuck Norris jokes on the internet about his strength and fearsomeness. For example:

Guns are warned not to play with Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door.

Death once had a near-Chuck Norris experience.

But what if Chuck Norris was an exhibitor? What feats of strength, endurance, and excellence could Chuck bring to trade shows? The mind boggles at the possibilities:

Chuck Norris sent a direct mail pre-show promotion to 100 pre-registered attendees – and 101 came.

Show contractors are so scared of Chuck Norris, they don’t charge him drayage.

Half of Chuck Norris’s competitors backed out of the show when they heard he was exhibiting there.

Chuck Norris is so smart, he selected a show where 100% of the entire buying market was attending.

Chuck Norris fixed a broken weld on his exhibit by squeezing it. With only two fingers. Of his left hand.

Chuck Norris installed an island trade show exhibit in just one hour. Without tools, instructions, or a ladder. On straight time. With a 15-minute break.

When Chuck Norris did a social media promotion for his trade show booth via Twitter, he caused the #failwhale to appear – and then it asked for his autograph.

Chuck Norris doesn’t need crowd gathers when he booth staffs; he needs crowd dispersers.

Chuck Norris doesn’t need to qualify leads, because all his leads are “A” leads.

Chuck Norris doesn’t need to measure his trade show results, because they all bought.

When Chuck Norris had a typo on his booth graphics, the dictionary changed its spelling of the word.

Chuck Norris worked an entire 5-day show in Germany, 10 hours a day, standing up, without a break, in cowboy boots that were 2 sizes too small. And still looked great.

Chuck Norris can eat convention center food every day of the show. Twice a day.

Chuck Norris’s exhibit was declared “Best of Show” – before it was set up.

Chuck Norris can set up a banner stand in under a second – just by looking at it.

Chuck Norris doesn’t need a stapler to attach business cards to lead cards – he just pinches them together.

None of the brochures Chuck Norris gives attendees get thrown away before the attendees return to their offices. Or after.

Chuck Norris had his island exhibit completely packed after the show — before his crates returned from drayage.

Chuck Norris took a lead from every single attendee at the show. On the first day.

If Chuck Norris were writing Chuck Norris exhibitor jokes, he would have come up with 100. Help a regular guy out, and add your own!

Want to have awesome Chuck Norris exhibiting skills? Then get the What’s Working In Exhibiting white paper, which will make you a black belt in trade shows. Click here to request your free copy.

I am finally situated after 2 months of travel. Out of all the cities, my first review is of the Natural Products Expo West show in Anaheim, CA. This trip will definitely be a historical milestone in my memory as the night before show opening, the Japan tsunami occurred. It was a pretty surreal evening for everyone around me when news broke.

The weather was awesome in Orange County. It was just around 80 degrees the entire time I was there. Nothing better than awesome California weather in March! I know the visitors across the street at Disneyland could not have been any happier. Food shows are certainly my favorite show to attend; so much for me to do, oops, I mean eat! The exhibits are colorful and lively, and the energy at food shows is so different compared to any other. Food is truly the universal language!

Natural products are geared more to natural, wholesome, and specialized foods. Most exhibitors target a ‘Whole Foods’ type grocer. The larger chain grocers are not too far behind as they are making natural foods a larger selection in their stores.

Here are a couple exhibit designs that caught my eye:

Horizon: a new generation recognizable brand in the milk (organic) section. Their exhibit used lightweight fabric graphics as their overhead branding structure.

Emergen-C: Another very popular household brand, especially during the cold season. They used bright laminates for their storage room and a matching hanging sign.

Barbara’s Bakery: They are a local Bay Area company & have recently turned into one of my favorite breakfast cereals. Their larger-than-life cereal box is a lightweight printed fabric structure. Great use of space!

Pirate Brands: They make the very popular Pirate Popcorn. They introduced some awesome new flavors at this year’s show. Of course, with a pirate-themed brand, the only way to go is mimicking a pirate lifestyle. They covered all details, even down to the flooring. Well done!

These acrylic bubble accents are becoming more and more popular across all industries. The 3-D effect is easily done and quite inexpensive. Very trade show friendly.

I just adored the multiple live hanging rose balls. I do not get to see this often. The only other places you might see these would be at hospitality or horticultural industry shows.

It’s so awesome to see 3-D elements like this in exhibits. I’m pretty sure it is a road show piece, but to haul into a traditional trade show is certainly not as easy as your traditional booth.

This backlit custom shape is awesome. The lighting effect was just right and not too bright for this size structure.

Another hanging structure that caught my eye is this layered piece which displayed teacups. They went a good route with mounting a traditional ring. This structure may have gotten lost without it.

Seventh Generation introduced an even more green packaging solution to their eco-friendly detergent. Recycled material is used for the outside casing while the detergent is packaged inside. Genius!

This product display incorporated monitors and used a fresh color pallet that gave a very clean feeling. The lighting effects acted as a good highlight as well.

All black everything! Skyline’s Mirage Monitor Mount paired with Skyline’s popular Stratus table.

Last but not least, fresh new graphics for my friends over at Vaska out of Berkeley.

And yet, there is more than just a shadow of truth in these fictional face-to-face facts. Read on for the unexpected insights from these counterfeit exhibition statistics:

10% of exhibit graphics portray products no longer sold by the exhibitor

24% of exhibitors rely on collecting attendees’ business cards, rather than using badge scanners or lead cards

41% of exhibitors do not have a formalized lead follow up plan

The show was over, my trade show booth was packed away, and so I headed for the door, clinging to a bundle of leads tucked tightly under my arm.

However, I soon found the exit clogged by an angry mob. At the apex of the bottleneck was an aged man, dressed in an outlandish plaid suit, desperately trying to squeeze his pair of battered exhibit cases through the narrow revolving door.

The crowd was hurling curses upon him, which only disoriented him further. As he swayed in his turmoil, his matching plaid hat fell to the floor. Instinctively I pushed through the throng to pick it up. While near the floor, I discovered that his case wheels were jammed with garbage. I plucked the garbage out, took the handles of his cases, and helped him through the door.

We pulled to the side in a quiet spot away from the flow of traffic. I gave him back his hat, which he placed on his head, regaining his composure. He sat on his cases and even smiled, as if he had finally solved a dilemma that had long gripped him.

“Thank you, young man, for your help,” he said in a voice stronger than I would have expected. “I had thought before coming to this event that perhaps my time on the show floor was at an end. Now I know it is. While I have spent many, many years and uncountable days ambling among the trade show aisles, I fear it is finally time for me to go to the great marshalling yard in the sky. I am grateful for you coming to my aid. Therefore, I feel it only right that I pass this on to you.”

From within the folds of his plaid jacket he pulled an ancient, leather-bound book, its cover adorned with an embossed border and its ragged pages edged in gold. The book reeked of incense and myrrh that evoked open-air markets and tented bazaars thrown up at desert crossroads in centuries past.

“When I was but a lad,” he continued, “fresh off the farm and newly commissioned as a travelling salesman, I was most fortunate to have befriended the silver-haired concierge at the great Conrad Hilton hotel. My first trip to a Chicago trade show was his last day on the job. Perhaps he saw something in me that made him trust me, for he gave me this book, which had been passed down from many others to him, and that I now in turn give to you.”

On the book’s cover, in golden letters, glowed the words, “Trade Show Proverbs.” I opened it and turned its yellowed pages. Some pages held words certainly older than the man before me, while a few appeared to have been written on by him, or perhaps his most recent predecessor.

The book began with proverbs to help calm the nerves frayed during a set-up crisis:

Many of the venerable book’s trade show proverbs aimed to illuminate the booth staffer:

Several trade show proverbs had sharp words of caution for those unfocused in their exhibit marketing:

The final two proverbs commented wisely on the human condition as found in the trade show world:

The words I read were new to me, and yet they rang so true, it was as if I had known them all my life. Riveted by the old book, I did not stop reading until the last page.

When I looked up to thank my benefactor, I discovered that he had silently rolled his cases away. But he had not really left me alone, having entrusted to my care the book of Trade Show Proverbs.

Hidden rules govern almost every area of our lives. They guide our behavior and expectations, yet are rarely written down for us in neat little books.

For example, there’s the 5 Second Rule: When a piece of food falls on the floor, you can eat it if you pick it up within five seconds. There’s the High Heel Rule: if a woman is taller than her date, she is less likely to wear high heels. And there’s the Full Moon Rule: On days with a full moon, there are more crimes committed and babies born.

Uncover the 18 Hidden Rules of Trade Shows

Trade shows also are governed by similarly hidden, yet immutable rules. You may have already run up against them without realizing it, or discovered them through arduous experience. Since forewarned is forearmed, here are 18 hidden rules of trade shows:

The more words you put on your trade show display, the fewer times they will be read.

The larger the crowd of people already in your booth, the more other people will want to visit your booth.

The person who complains the most about the value of trade shows is usually the one who knows (and tries) the least.

The more fun trade show attendees have in your booth during the show, the more serious business you will do after the show.

The effort each booth staffer puts forth increases as the distance between them and their boss decreases.

Your best booth staffers are usually the ones who talk the least and listen the most.

The longer a booth staffer stretches out their break, the fewer leads they will take when they are actually staffing the booth.

The colors of your trade show display will likely be determined by: 1. your brand colors, or 2. the latest design trends or 3. your company president’s spouse.

The length of time to design your exhibit expands exponentially with the number of decision makers involved.

The greater the distance a visitor has traveled to attend a trade show, the higher the level of hospitality you should provide.

Carpet belongs on the floor of your trade show booth, not on the display backwall.

The better-looking the booth staffer’s shoes, the more likely the staffer will complain about sore feet.

The more years you exhibit at the same show, the more you will have repeat customers visit you in your booth.

The more the trade show leads holder looks like a trash can, the more likely your booth captain will end up screaming.

The bigger the main visual image on your trade show exhibit, the clearer people will understand your message.

The older your trade show display, the less innovative your booth visitors will perceive your company.

The more aisle space bordering your booth, the more opportunities your staffers have to engage with attendees.

The faster you follow up your trade show leads, the greater the sales you will generate from that show.

Now that these hidden rules have been revealed to you, may you enter your next show hall with the open eyes of a seasoned exhibitor. And if you’ve discovered your own hidden rules of trade shows, please, please, please share them with us in the comment box below. There’s no rule against it!

Returning from Vegas I dream about the trade show of my fantasies, involving a silky-smooth set up, eager booth staffers, a torrent of leads, and an appreciative CEO.

Leaving Las Vegas on a red-eye flight after another long trade show, I lean my bleary-eyed head against the dark window. Fortunate enough to at least have noise-cancelling headphones, I barely hear the drunken outbursts of broke gamblers and over-tired infants. After 4 days of perpetual motion, I quickly fall into a deep sleep…and dream.

It’s early on the first day of set up, and as I walk through the show hall towards my booth space, I am greeted by a cheerful labor crew, who have finished unpacking all my crates…which were already delivered. The set up goes smoothly and is completed on straight-time. Even the new trade show exhibit graphics that were sent directly from the exhibit house fit perfectly, matched the color of the existing panels, and had no typos. I go to dinner that night relaxed, and even have time to go to a show.

The next morning, two full hours before the trade show opens, and all the little booth details are done. The lead cards are on clip boards, the pens are in place, the at-show promos are unwrapped, and every computer is in place and hooked up to the internet. All my booth staffers are in the booth eager for the pre-show meeting to start, so they can be completely familiar with our goals for the show, the benefits of the new products, the booth layout, and our leads system.

There is also an extra booth staffer, brought by a co-worker. “Ted just started this week,” says his friend. “But don’t worry about him being a burden – he used to be a client. Ted knows our products and what our clients value about them, which is why he joined our sales team. He has also staffed trade shows before and twice won a best booth staffer award.”

Ten minutes before the show starts, the CEO arrives. He is smiling broadly at how well the exhibit expresses the company brand, how much better we look than the competitors, and how friendly and professional the booth staff look. He greets the entire booth staff and encourages them to do their best, then leaves to gloat by the competitors’ trade show exhibit booths.

When the show opens, there is a mad dash as attendees flock into the booth, eager to learn more about the new product they heard about before the show via email, direct mail, Twitter, and from their local Account Executives. The torrid pace continues throughout the day, and there is a steady crowd around the product demo stations. The only break I get from staffing the booth is to introduce the CEO to a writer from the industry business journal who wants to do a feature story about our new product.

On day two and three of the show, the pace in the booth is still strong, even as the overall show traffic level slows down. The booth staff remains cheerful, aware of how their hard work will pay off for the company. By day three we have to run to the show services desk to get two extra rolls of paper for the lead retrieval machines.

Then, almost abruptly, the show closes and the last visitor leaves. Just as we wave goodbye to a repeat client leaving towards the entrance, the carpets are being rolled up from the other direction, to allow a forklift to arrive with all our empty crates. The booth staff stays until all the small stuff is packed away, and the labor crew takes over to complete packing the exhibit.

I am just about to leave when the CEO shows up again. He had heard about how well our booth and staff performed, from clients, business partners, and even some jealous competitors. “I know trade shows take a lot of effort to pull off, and that you did your best to make it look effortless,” he says. “This show will mean a lot to our future sales, our image, and the quick adoption of our new products. Thanks for making it a success.”

Finally, the CEO asks if he can hand-carry the leads himself back to headquarters, as he is flying home that evening. He wants to personally bring the leads for his morning meeting the next day with the VP of Sales and Marketing about accelerating the follow up plan.

I leave the show hall, walking on air, looking for fairy wings, magic mirrors, and pixie dust.

Sound like a pipe-and-drape dream? I hope this isn’t all fantasy, that with good fortune and hard work, some of it has already happened to you. What else would be in your trade show fantasy? Let us know in the comments box below. And keep dreaming big!

Inspired by Sun Microsystems CEO's recent resignation in haiku, and by exhibitors' survey answers, here are 17 haiku about better trade show booth staffing.

The haiku, a short form poem of Japanese origin, was in the news recently when Sun Microsystems’ CEO Jonathan Schwartz quit (via Twitter) by posting this haiku:

Financial crisis

Stalled too many customers

CEO no more

That news reminded me of some near-haiku I had read recently in an unexpected place. While reviewing responses to a survey question about booth staffing, I was struck by several exhibitors’ concise, almost poetic language, to the point that they reminded me of haiku poetry.

(In case you don’t remember from school, Haiku are very short, three line poems of only 17 syllables. The first line has 5 syllables, the second 7, and the final line has 5 more. )

Inspired by former Sun CEO Schwartz, I went looking for more within the survey answers. While a few could almost stand verbatim, I still made some nips and tucks to ”find” 17 haiku about booth staffing, one for each of the haiku’s 17 syllables.

Because so much of trade show success hinges on the quality of your booth staffers, many of these haiku extoll the virtue and nuances of choosing the right staff:

1.
being excited

to be at the trade show makes

a huge difference

2.

once used tech people

we cut that back and now send

sales & marketing

3.

one man one woman

in the booth at every show

when it’s possible

4.

staff who can perform

are able to work the crowd

not the booth work them

5.

staff with the people

that know specific products

for specific shows

6.

to pick our staffers

how they engage customers

handle travel well

7.

technical product

must answer detailed questions

staff with salespeople

Other haiku promote the value of pre-show meetings, and what should be covered at them:

8.

hold pre-show meeting

every morning of the show

outline objectives

9.

offer much info

to each booth staffer pre-show

even for veterans

10.

pre-show meeting share

last show ROI results

salespeople respond

11.

have a trade show guide

that outlines expectations

and where to find things

12.

those working the show

must have a clear idea

what is expected

Two haiku go to the heart of what a good booth staffer needs to do to succeed:

13.

remain attentive

listen to the customer

no email or phones

14.

keep the contact brief

this is not the place to sell

generate interest

Often one finds wisdom shrouded in classic haiku. These haiku proclaim the wisdom of training for your booth staffers:

15.

with booth staff training

get better quality leads

plus we get more leads

16.

more and more training

product, industry knowledge

assess client need

17.

hired an outside firm

train and monitor booth staff

For many people, managing and staffing trade shows is somewhere between an inconvenience and a hassle, what with the travel, the time away from home, the endless details, and the long hours.

But for others, the love of trade shows runs so deep that the only thing that will get it out of their blood is embalming fluid. Could that be you? Here are 19 signs that you’re addicted to trade shows:

You go to Vegas for a bachelor party at Mandalay Bay, but rather than hit the casino, you want to go check out the show floor.

You don’t feel right washing your hair with shampoo that doesn’t come out of a one-ounce bottle.

You wear a show lanyard around your neck…at home.

When you meet someone new at your office, instead of asking for their business card, you ask them if you can scan their badge.

When you hear someone say, “He’s a B.S. artist,” you think it’s a compliment about booth staffing skills.

You expect everyone to know what drayage means.

You think all client meetings should be only 10 minutes long and held standing up.

Your living room has a strip of red carpet 10 feet wide going through it.

You think Morgan Freeman lives in Dallas.

You named your cat “Orlando” and your dog “McCormick.”

You don’t have a problem with trade shows that start on the weekend.

You’ve tried to talk your spouse into relocating to Las Vegas.

You don’t feel too guilty about missing your kid’s birthday party for your industry’s main trade show.

You think nothing about paying $11.50 for a hot dog and soda.

You pride yourself that you can set up your trade show display in 5 minutes.

You can remember your exhibit house’s phone number easier than the date of your anniversary.

If you are actually in your hometown when the local Auto or Home show takes place, you never miss them.

You get mad and launch into a fact-filled tirade when someone casually questions the value of trade shows.

When you finally redeem some of your vast stockpile of frequent flyer miles, you take a vacation in Las Vegas, Orlando, or Chicago.

I started writing this post in my head before remembering two similar (and better) blog posts that certainly inspired me: the talented Christina Stallings’ “13 Telltale Signs You’re an Event or Trade Show Professional” and the energetic Emilie Barta’s post, “You Know You Are An Event Professional When …”

Did you recognize yourself in any of these signs? Got more of your own? Share your own signs you’re addicted to trade shows in the comment box below. Go ahead, it’s alright. You’ll feel better.

Trade shows are a serious marketing medium in which we invest billions of dollars. In our quest to achieve business results, we often talk about getting the highest ROI (Return on Investment) or ROO (Return on Objectives). But what about the greatest ROF (Return on Fun)?

Trade shows are about meeting people, those unpredictable, emotional beings. To be engaging, you need to be having some fun, because if you are bored or too serious, that puts up an invisible barrier. After a few days per show, and many shows per year, how can you keep yourself entertained (without going overboard at the clubs and the casinos)? Here are a few suggestions:

Look up on the show city’s Visitors and Convention Bureau website all the fun activities you can do outside of show hours (try indoor skydiving in Las Vegas, it’s a blast).

Go to dinner with the funniest sales person who is staffing the booth. Repeat nightly.

Count how many trade show booths you can walk by before a booth staffer tries to engage you.

Visit your competitors at the show and ask them what they don’t do well. Watch ’em squirm.

When you meet attendees in your booth, stop treating them like numbers on the sales chart, and treat them instead as if they are going to be your new best friend.

Drinking game: Walk down the trade show aisle carrying a bottle of water (unless you are at a European show). Whenever a booth staffer says, “Hi! How are you?” you reply, “Fine,” take a swig, and keep walking.

Pick up giveaways from your fellow exhibitors, and then give them back … to different exhibitors.

Go to lunch with the second-funniest sales person who is staffing the booth. Repeat daily.

Look up old friends you haven’t seen in ages that live in the show city, via Facebook, LinkedIn or other social media, and relive the glory days.

Create a fun activity in your booth that helps get your message across to visitors.

Walk into an island trade show exhibit and play with their products. Count how many seconds (minutes?) it takes for a booth staffer to engage you.

Smile at your booth visitors, even if they aren’t. Pretty soon you’ll both be smiling.

Have a contest with fellow staffers to see who can work specific obscure words into conversation when talking with booth visitors, such as “corollary,” “obtuse,” and “Sandra Day O’Connor.”

Walk the show with a colleague. Have a bet on who can count the most: booth staffers sitting down or booth staffers on the phone. A third friend can count booth staffers eating or drinking. (This is like counting states on license plates when on a long drive.) Loser buys lunch.

Have another bet: Before you hit the show floor, bet which trendy new color will be on the trade show displays. Then count the exhibits with that color. Loser buys drinks … that are the color they picked.

Thank everyone who has helped you with the show – your booth staffers, your exhibit house, your manager, the show owner, the show labor, and especially your booth visitors. You’d be surprised how much fun that can be.
